The funny thing about shooting pictures with your digital cameras is, well, you get to hear lot of stuff from the neighborhood expert. Then, as you start learning the ropes, you find that most of the advice was at best useless, or worse, just myths. We have all had our share of such friendly advice. This series was shot in Ukrainian villages during the Winter and Fall of 2009.
In countries such as Ukraine, Russia, Belarus and Moldova, life in the countryside is hard to imagine. Time seems to stand still, while entropic forces prevail unhindered by the intervention of the government, or any other organization. These places, almost untouched by industrial progress, are mostly inhabited by elderly people (mainly women); all the young ones have migrated to the nearest cities. Many of these inhabitants are over 90 years old. Many of them are not capable of tending to their own farms. The state sponsored pensions these people receive are sufficient enough only to buy bread and milk. Moreover, in many of these places, there are no schools or jobs, no centralized gas or plumbing, and no hospitals, doctors or pharmacies. « Cinderella’s Chair » Collection
“Cinderella’s Chair” is a collection of chairs made by designer Anna Ter Haar from Denmark. Prostheses of glass, like a prosthetic leg, custom made for each chair. Glass is a malleable material when heated, so the glass was blown onto the chair, which provides every chair with its own unique prosthesis.
Glass however, is also a very fragile material. It is not often used for purposes of construction. The legs of glass are strong enough to carry weight though. One can easily sit on the chairs, something you do not expect when you see them.
